Cambridge Hasler (29 March 2015)

31/3/2015

Some of the team
Ricky leading Div 7
Despite wind and rain, the BSCC team did very well at the Cambridge Hasler, earning a total of ten trophies. Our total points score (224) brought the team 3rd place overall and was tantalisingly close to that of Norwich CC (2nd, 229 points), who themselves were only just beaten by Chelmsford CC (231). The club is now lying in joint third place in the region. See Hasler league table

Matt, Ricky and Mike T all won their races, and there were promotions for Heidi, Ricky, Mike T and Octavia. Additional: Matt has also been awarded a well-deserved promotion to Division 2 - well done Matt!

Gent International Marathon (28 March 2015)

31/3/2015

Stortford's Ella Beatty achieved third place in the Junior Ladies race in the 2015 Gent International Marathon, with a time of 1:51:42.

The course for the 18km race begins on the Regatta Lake in Gent, followed by two 7km laps through the centre of the town along the canal system before returning to the lake. Ella's achievement is very impressive as the standard of competition at this event is always very high and the distance is somewhat longer than she would normally race.

Ella was one of 20 promising young canoeists invited to take part in the event as part of the GB Development Squad. Each year the Marathon Racing Committee review the participants they have seen at the regional training days and hand-pick a number of youngsters to compete in this prestigious and challenging event. The intention is to identify some of the youngsters who may eventually progress into the GB team and give them some early experience of international competition.

BSCC - still reaching the gold standard

27/3/2015

We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new TopClub Gold and ClubMark certificates!

TopClub is British Canoeing's scheme for recognising
well-managed clubs who are striving to offer the best in coaching and sports development, and Gold is the highest standard. When BSCC first achieved this in 2007 we were only the 7th club in England to achieve TopClub Gold status, and we are now audited annually to demonstrate that standards are still being maintained.

TopClub incorporates the core values of ClubMark,
SportEngland's "kite mark" scheme for high-quality community sports clubs.

The next challenge will be be to improve the service that we offer to disabled people and gain accreditation as a "Paddle-Ability Top Club". There are some exciting projects regarding this in the pipeline.

Thameside 2

1/3/2015

A small contingent of Stortford paddlers made the trip to Reading for what turned out to be one of the biggest races on the calendar with a huge number of boats in each start. The 19 mile race to Longridge was made all the more challenging with high winds and moving water on the Thames, causing extra safety measures to be put in place.

The starts were split into four groups with slow K2s followed by slow K1s and then fast K2s followed by fast K1s.

Ella was the only Stortford boat in the early starts and made a fantastic start leading the group away from the line. Having never paddled this distance before Ella did incredibly well to finish the race in a very respectable time of 02:38:20 in what would later turn out to be good enough to win her class.

Mike and Alasdair where up next in the fast K2 start continuing their preparations for the DW on a crucial part of the course, and finished in a respectable 9th place in 02:32:10.

Finally in the fast start where Matt, Josh and Sim along with Stortford training group regulars Danny and Stelian racing for Leaside. With a number of around 70 boats on the start line there was always going to be chaos and a very difficult start ensued with only Stelian getting in a good position off the start. Both Danny and Matt fought very hard to battle past a large number of boats finishing in 02:09:28 and 02:11:44 respectively. Stelian was next in on 02:15:00 followed by Sim on 02:17:36, while Josh decided to break his boat not once but twice eventually causing a retirement at the halfway mark.

Little did anyone know that at the time every K1 in the fast start had been deemed to have jump started and was therefore disqualified. This while handing Ella her win meant that only her and the K2 were deemed to have finish the race.

Also a big congratulations to Ella who on the same day has found out she has been selected of a GBR development trip at the end of the month
